Causes Of Leg Pain

Most people think that leg pain is Sciatica.  Leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in the low back caused by a herniated lumbar disc.  The same type of pain can be caused irritation of the nerve by bone spurs from the posterior joints of the spine or from thickening of a ligament.  A different problem that causes leg pan is called a false sciatica or  Piriformis syndrome.  This problem is caused by the Sciatic Nerve being pinched by muscles in the buttock.

Sciatica

Sciatica is a very specific type of leg pain.  There is numbness and tingling in the leg that extends all the way to the toes.  There does not have to be back pain but often it is present.  If you think you have Sciatica this link may be of interest.

Stenosis

In lumbar stenosis, the spinal nerve roots in the lower back are compressed, or choked, and this can produce symptoms of sciatica — tingling, weakness or numbness that radiates from the low back and into the buttocks and legs – especially with being on your feet.  Most importantly the pain, tingling, and burning sensations stop or reduce when you sit.

Piriformis Syndrome

The exact causes of Piriformis syndrome are unknown. Suspected causes include:

Any one or combination of the above problems can affect the piriformis muscle (causing buttock pain) and may affect the adjacent sciatic nerve (causing pain, tingling, or numbness in the back of the thigh, calf, or foot).
